Dinners

Dinners form a major part of the college calendar, and they come in all shapes and sizes for any occasion. No matter how formal a dinner is, it is always a pretty relaxed event, and offers a great chance to make new friends as well as catch up with old ones.

Please feel free to also contact the college catering staff by emailing catering [at] st-annes.ox.ac.uk if you have any questions about the dinners mentioned on this page or about special dietary requirements.

Formal Halls

St. Anne's regularly holds Formal Halls during term time. These are dinners put on by College for undergraduates, graduates and Fellows. The dress code is formal, occasionally with academic gowns. You may bring your own wine to Formal Halls or purchase it in the dining hall (limited to one bottle per person).

Formal Halls take place on Thursdays of Weeks 4 and 8 and Fridays of Weeks 2 and 6 of each term. Tickets go on sale for each Formal Hall on Tuesdays of Weeks 1, 3, 5 and 7 at 12:15 PM in the Dining Hall. It is recommended that you buy early, as tickets sell out very quickly. Tickets cost £8.00 each, charged to your college account (battels) using your student card, and you are limited to being able to purchase no more than 4 tickets per person.

Exchange dinners

Every term, the MCR organises exchange dinners, in which we invite another MCR to a formal hall in College and, in return, we get to go to one of theirs. You will hear more about these closer to the time; it is well worth signing up quickly, as they prove very popular.

Founders' Dinner

Founders' Dinner is now regarded as a tradition at St. Anne's. The event began with the visit of Chancellor Macmillan in 1979, the year that St. Anne's became coeducational. It was such a success that the dinner was continued. It is an occasion to remind us all that St. Anne's was once a women's college and were pioneers in the establishment of female education in Oxford. It is the only dinner of its kind, and is therefore of special significance to St. Anne's.

MCR dinners

MCR dinners are for 25 MCR students and sometimes one guest who tends to be a Fellow from the college. They cost £15, and for that you get a top-notch 3 course meal as well as plenty of wine and coffee.

St. Anne's MCR dinners are renowned throughout the university: the food is excellent and the distinguished atmosphere of the upper dinning hall make them not to be missed. Before each dinner, you will receive an email from a member of the MCR committee to which you must reply if you want to go. As with any other dinners, places for these tend to fill up very quickly, so it is well worth signing up early.

Supervisors' dinners

At supervisors' dinners, each student is invited to bring their research supervisor to dinner at college. This is a great opportunity to get your supervisor out of the office and get to know them on a more informal level. Everyone is skeptical the first time, but these dinners really bring students and supervisors closer together.

Partners' dinners

Here students are asked to bring along their partners or friends to give them the opportunity to enjoy the college atmosphere, meet your colleagues and come and have a look round.

Subject Family Dinners

The MCR Subject Family Events also involve a dinner in hall. Please see the Subject Family Dinners page (under the Academics section) for more information on this event.
