Medical Support

For a student, few things are more inconvenient than being ill. Fortunately, there are a host of medical services available in this event, some of which are described below. More information on these services can also be found at the welfare page of the College website.

College nurse

The college nurse, Catherine Haines, has a wealth of knowledge and professional experience to help you deal with any problem, big or small, welfare or medically related. The nurse works alongside the college doctors (see further below) and has an office in the main college site:

Catherine Haines
St. Anne's College Woodstock Road Oxford OX2 6HS
Telephone: 01865 274855
Email: catherine.haines [at] st-annes.ox.ac.uk

You can enquire at the college lodge for directions as well as the code to enter the building. The nurse is available for consultation Monday through Friday during term (Weeks 0-9) from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. Of these times, Wednesday mornings from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM are spent in the Warden's Office of the RSH graduate accommodation site rather than the office on the main campus, so RSH residents can visit the nurse a bit more easily then.

General Practitioners (GPs)

College works closely with a local doctors' surgery ("clinic" for North Americans), which students are encouraged to join when they start studying. The recommended one for St. Anne's students is the following:

Drs Judith Bogdanor, Laurence Leaver, and Mark O'Shea
Jericho Health Centre, Walton Street, Oxford OX2 6NW
Telephone: 01865 311234

Whichever surgery you choose to sign with, you can call them outside working hours if you believe you need to consult a doctor urgently but it is not a medical emergency. In this case, you will be connected to the appropriate out-of-hours telephone line. A local GP will then ring you back, usually within half an hour.

Emergencies

For medical (or other) emergencies anywhere in the UK, the number to dial is 999 (and not 911 as in North America).

If you live in college, don't deal with anything on your own: whatever the time of day or night, you can contact the Porters' Lodge (in person at the entrance to the main college site on Woodstock Road or by telephoning 01865 274800) or the assistant dean on duty (see the welfare page for more information on the decanal team).

Medical emergencies within Oxford are dealt with by the Accidents and Emergencies (A&E) unit of the John Radcliffe Hospital, sometimes referred to as "the JR." For directions, please consult the hospital's directions page. Please note that the other hospitals in Oxford might not be appropriately equipped to deal with a given medical emergency.

NHS (National Health Service)

The UK's NHS (National Health Service) runs free, 24-hour service called NHS Direct, which offers on-demand health advice and information. You can access NHS Direct at any time by calling 08454647.
